Hair Washing After Hair Transplant – What to Keep in Mind

The final outcome of a hair transplant doesn’t depend solely on the procedure itself. It is equally important to strictly follow your doctor’s post-operative care instructions.

In particular, the first hair washes after the transplant must be done with extra care before full healing has occurred. This involves using specially formulated products and gentle washing techniques.

Proper post-operative care helps prevent infections, supports the healing process, and ensures that the newly transplanted grafts anchor properly. All of this is essential for achieving the best possible results.

Hair Washing After a Hair Transplant – Day 2 to Day 11

Step 1: Apply the special lotion

At MedHair Clinic, you will receive a specially formulated spray lotion after your hair transplant to support the cellular regeneration of your scalp. It also helps soften the crusts in the transplanted area by keeping the scalp moisturized.

Before your first hair wash after the transplant, this lotion should be applied to both the recipient and donor areas. Seven to eight drops in total are sufficient. Let the lotion sit for at least 45 minutes.

To avoid damaging the transplanted area, make sure to spray the lotion in the direction of the grafts’ hair growth.

Step 3: Use medical shampoo and wash your hair gently

We recommend using a specific medical shampoo designed for use after a hair transplant. This shampoo should be the only one used during the healing period. Do not apply it directly to the grafts. Instead, lather it with water in your hands and gently dab the foam onto the scalp without applying pressure. You can gently massage the donor area, but the recipient area should be treated with the utmost care, especially if your skin is sensitive.

Step 2: Rinse the special lotion gently

After the lotion has been left on for 45 minutes, gently rinse it off with lukewarm water. To avoid applying pressure to the freshly transplanted grafts, we recommend using a jug or bowl instead of a showerhead.

Step 4: Rinse and dry

After letting the shampoo sit for two to three minutes, rinse it out with lukewarm water using a jug or bowl. Pat the donor area dry with a clean towel. Let the recipient area air dry and avoid towel contact to protect the freshly implanted hair follicles. If recommended, you can now apply additional care products, such as aloe vera gel, to support healing.

You should begin washing your hair once daily from the first wash onward to help establish a regular routine.

Hair Washing After a Hair Transplant – Day 11 to Day 14

Starting from day 11 after the transplant, you can begin gently removing the scabs. It is important not to pick, scratch, or forcefully remove them earlier, as this could disrupt the healing process and potentially damage the newly transplanted grafts.

Why Scab Removal Is Important

Removing scabs is crucial for the vitality and health of the transplanted hair follicles. If this step is neglected, it can hinder the growth of new hair in the transplanted area and increase the risk of losing grafts. To avoid damaging the new follicles, this procedure must be carried out very gently.

Gentle Shampooing to Remove Scabs

To remove the scabs, we recommend a special washing routine. Apply the special lotion to both the transplanted and donor areas, and this time let it sit for a full hour to fully soften the scabs. After one hour, rinse the lotion off in the shower using lukewarm water and minimal water pressure. Only use the shampoo provided by our clinic. Lather it with water in your hands and gently dab it onto your scalp. Gently massage both the transplanted and donor areas for a few minutes to help loosen the scabs. Rinse your scalp thoroughly under the shower with lukewarm water and gentle pressure.

Proper Drying and Aftercare Following a Hair Transplant

After washing, gently pat the donor area dry with a clean towel. Allow the treated (transplanted) area to air dry. Continue applying either aloe vera gel or another recommended aftercare lotion to your scalp to support healing.

Hair Washing After a Hair Transplant – Day 15 to Day 30

The removal of scabs marks the beginning of a new phase in the recovery process.

Washing Your Hair Under the Shower After a Hair Transplant – Day 15 to Day 30

From day 15 onward, you can begin washing your hair under the shower again. Be sure to use moderate water pressure to avoid putting unnecessary stress on the treated areas. Warm water feels soothing on the scalp and helps gently relax the skin.

Gently Massaging the Transplanted Area

When shampooing, always handle your scalp with great care. Pour the medical shampoo into your palms and mix it with water until it forms a lather. Use gentle, circular massage movements to apply the foam to your scalp. This helps stimulate blood circulation around the transplanted areas.

Rinsing Under the Shower

After massaging the shampoo into your scalp and letting it sit briefly, rinse it thoroughly with lukewarm water using moderate pressure under the shower.

Gentle Drying of the Recipient Area

You may now gently pat the donor area dry with a clean towel as usual. The transplanted area should still be left to air dry naturally. To protect the delicate grafts, avoid any direct contact or rubbing of the scalp.

When Can I Wash My Hair Normally Again After a Hair Transplant?

You can return to your regular hair care routine 30 days after the procedure. By this stage, the transplanted areas are well healed, and the grafts are securely anchored. From this point on, you can safely use your preferred shampoos and hair care products without any issues.
